Drtaichi - Chi Mail
November 2007
Greetings

Welcome to Chi-Mail our new and improved newsletter to be brought to you monthly from yours truly DrTaiChi. First off "Thanks" for taking time out of your busy day to read this newsletter. It's been a long time since we had a regular newsletter, and we are very excited about our new relationship with Namaste Interactive to bring you tidbits of inspiration each month.

Why a newsletter? I get them in my email box a lot - and most of the time they're just too much to read, turn out to be only shameless commerce and often am just a waste of my time. But on the other hand, newsletters are a great way to keep in touch with all the people I know. We're doing a lot of really cool stuff these days, and I think you'll be interested in it.

Chi-Mail is meant to entertain as well as to inform. One of our most popular newsletter items in the past are the inspirational quotes. So each month, Check out the Words of Wisdom Section were we'll include a passage that has moved us. This first issue starts us off with an inspirational quote from Rumi - one of my favorites. Each issue you will be able to find this quote in our Words of Wisdom Section.

Your copy of Chi-Mail will also contain our product reviews & music picks. People are always asking me if we have a music cd available. Well, putting out a disk of music is a very complicated and expensive process, so what we've decided to do instead is create an iTunes playlist for all our favorites.

Each issue will also include a section on T'ai Chi instruction. We'll break down a new movement, or show you the details of important basic drills.

I hope you enjoy Chi-Mail, we welcome your feedback and comments.

Have a wonderful day.

Move of the Month

Our first Move of the month is the essential Bow Step (or North and South) drill. I start out every one of my practice sessions with this drill. I first learned this drill the first time I went to China for training and competition. My coaches at the Beijing Sports Institute asked for an audition, so I demonstrated the routine I'd been working on. They smiled and nodded (basically saying, "Not too bad for an odd White Guy." Then they taught me this drill. For the next four days, this was all they let me do. Forward stance from one end of the training hall to the other… and back again. Six hours a day.

The first day I just thought it was kind of weird. The second day I started to get bored a little bit. The third day I was getting kind of pissed off - after all I was paying for this! But on the fourth day, I suddenly understood that there was something really important and powerful in this practice. Try it - and let me know how it works out for you.

Words of Wisdom

This first issue starts us off with an inspirational quote from Rumi - one of my favorites.

"If your knowledge of fire has been turned to certainty by words alone, then seek to be cooked by the fire itself. Don't abide in borrowed certainty. There is no real certainty until you burn; if you wish for this, sit down in the fire."

How often do we have lessons or breakthroughs, or read inspirational books or see a movie like The Secret or The Peaceful Warrior and think "Wow! What a concept." Suddenly it translates your understanding of the world in a different way. And yet somehow, nothing in your world changes very much. The problem is, all this new understanding is just in your head. It hasn't permeated into your bones - into your flesh. You haven't "embodied it." As Rumi says, how can you know of fire unless you burn?

This for me is why T'ai Chi is so powerful. In Full-Circle Coaching, all my clients are required to learn T'ai Chi. In this coaching format, we ask some deep Spiritual and philosophical personal questions. But where is the fire? T'ai Chi is physical - it makes your bones creak and your flesh burn. In T'ai Chi practice, when we talk about balance or alignment, you don't have to guess or imagine this concept - you're sitting smack in the fire of it.
